Communication and Married Couples in Lagos Metropolis

Abstract

The study examined the role of communication among married couples in Lagos Metropolis. Primary data were obtained through structured questionnaire administered to 250 married couples in Lagos State, Nigeria. Data were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The mean time married couples sample communicated on daily basis was 2 times with 32.5% indicated that they communicate between 1-2 times per day. Respondent knew that communication is the key to a successful marriage ( =3.61). The major factors responsible for lack of effective communications among married couples in Lagos state were; sexual dissatisfaction ( =3.72), and finance status ( =3.64) and single word responses ( =3.69). PPMC analysis revealed a significant relationship (p˂0.01) between level of educational(r=0.124), religiosity (r=0.117), level of income (r=-0.093) of the respondents’ and the frequency of communication. The study concluded that respondents’ level of education, religiosity and level of income had influence on effective communications among married couples. The study therefore recommended that religious institutions should provide adequate materials and seminars for couples in order to increase effective communication between couples.
